At The Tallow Shed, we want packaging that works in real life.
As busy mums ourselves, we know skincare doesn’t live neatly on a bathroom shelf. It travels in handbags, gym bags, nappy bags, coat pockets, and of course, wherever we leave things in the car!
So we chose packaging that is practical, durable, and responsibly designed.
That’s why our creams come in aluminium tins rather than glass jars.
Why we choose aluminium
1. Lightweight and practical
Glass jars may look beautiful, but they’re heavy and fragile.
Aluminium tins are:
- much lighter to carry
- far less likely to break
- easy to slip into a bag or pocket
That means you can take your cream wherever life takes you.
2. Highly recyclable material
Aluminium is one of the most recyclable materials available.
It can be recycled again and again without losing quality, making it an efficient material for packaging.
Unlike many cosmetic containers, our packaging (tin and lid) are made from a single material, which makes recycling simpler.
When your tin is empty, simply rinse it and place it in household recycling.
3. Lower transport impact
Because aluminium tins are lighter than glass jars, they require less energy to transport.
When products are shipped from manufacturers to warehouses and then to customers, weight matters.
Lighter packaging helps reduce the overall transport footprint of each product.
4. Designed to be reused
Our tins are designed to be reused long after the cream is finished.
Many customers (and especially our daughters) keep them for:
- hair pins or jewellery
- travel containers
- lip balms or small essentials
- sewing kits or first aid bits
A small tin can have a surprisingly long second life.
Sustainably designed packaging
We believe packaging should be as thoughtful as the product inside it.
That’s why we chose aluminium tins that are:
- durable and practical
- widely recyclable
- reusable at home
- lighter to transport than glass
It’s a small choice that helps reduce waste while making our creams easier to use every day.
Where we do use glass
Most of our creams and balms are packaged in aluminium tins because they are lightweight, durable, and easy to carry with you.
However, some products — such as our bath salts and face cleansers — are packaged in glass jars.
We choose glass for these products because it works better for their texture and use. Glass is strong, stable, and well suited to dry or granular ingredients like salts, where a wider opening and rigid container can make the product easier to use.
Just like aluminium, glass is also widely recyclable and can be reused many times at home.
Our goal is always the same: to choose packaging that is practical, responsible, and appropriate for the product inside.
Fun Fact: Our bath salts jars were previously filled with the gorgeous tallow that we use in our products. We give them a good scrub down and disinfect them before re-using for our bath salts.
Packaging peanuts that are biodegradable
We do add some packaging peanuts with our order to protect your precious orders...
But don't worry, they are fully biodegradable and can be put out with your food waste, dropped on the garden for the worms or for children to have fun dissolving in water :-)
